23.08.2014 1st XV v Blackrock (A)
Overall, for a first game it was satisfactory and gives promise for the season. There was enthusiasm from both sides and in the first half, which was very even, Rock looked to have built a good side. However, in the second half Marys looked stronger more composed and more threatening. Rock lost two players late in the first half, a scrumhalf and a number six, both were significant losses. Our overall play was fast and direct with good chase and cover, the passing however was wayward on many occasions and had this been more accurate the score could have been higher for the visitors. Some of the tackling too was uneven. There were several key players missing, from the pack, the skipper, Kevin Sheahan (slight hamstring), Darragh Frawley, Ciaran Ruddock (exams) and Brian Mc Govern. Behind the scrum, Cathal Marsh and Mark Sexton. We welcomed back the two Sweeneys (Richie to the back row) and there were some very promising performances form in the pack, Tom O’Reilly at one and Barry O’Flanagan at seven, who was outstanding and in the backs Rob Glynn at nine, Ryan O’Loughlin, 13, who showed real appetite and increased physicality and Steve Toal-Lennon who was unfortunately injured (dislocated shoulder). Two newcomers showed good potential, David Fanagan, who was at 15 for most of the game and had a late run at nine, he was alert and keen and winger Toolan who showed an ability to do what wingers do, score and he has real pace.
